This session will review the technology behind DXA and the uses in a clinical setting (diagnosis, fracture risk, and monitoring changes).

Target Audience

This continuing education activity is intended for use by health professionals who participate in the care of patients at risk for or suffering from osteoporosis, in the areas of primary care, endocrinology, geriatrics, gynecology, internal medicine, obstetrics, orthopedics, osteopathy, pediatrics, physiatry, radiology, rheumatology and physical therapy.

This includes physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, pharmacists, physician assistants, technologists, researchers, public health professionals and health educators with an interest in osteoporosis and bone health.

Learning Objectives

1. Describe the technology behind Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) and its strengths and weaknesses as a diagnostic test: a technical quality perspective.
2. Describe the three uses of DXA in the clinical setting (diagnosis, fracture risk, and monitoring changes).
3. Provide clinicians techniques for determining the accuracy of DXA scans and reports before incorporating them into patient management.
4. Case studies for review.
